Rev. Liberty Savard Speaks to Americans
"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn
away!" (2 Timothy 3:1-5, NKJV).
The stage has been set for centuries for the last days and perilous times, which have now come upon us. God had His prophets write of these troubled times thousands of years ago. He did not preordain these days, but He knew that they would come because His people would not do what was necessary to prevent them from coming.
His promise to us, from thousands of years ago until this very day has always been: He would send His Son to bring life and hope and peace to every heart in the world that would long for God and seek His redemption. Hebrews 13:8 assures us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Many people in the United States, and perhaps around the world, have looked at 9/11/2001 as a day when the security of our world changed forever. Most of the rest of the world knew that they were living in a far riskier world than Americans were aware of before 9/11. It is not that the world became so much more dangerous that fateful morning, it is that Americans were shocked into the reality of the danger already present. Hear me, Americans, our world was not as safe as we once believed it to be, nor is it as dangerous as so many have begun to fear it to now be.
But the grace and mercy of our great God still holds out
the answer-we who are called by His name are to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from our wicked
ways-and He will hear from heaven and heal our land (2nd Chronicles 7:14). We who believe in a loving God must now begin to voice words of humility, words of prayer, words seeking to know His face rather than what His hand holds for us, and words of repentance and commitment to a turning away from our own wicked ways. We can rely upon our God to then do His part.
Do not let the words of your mouth become negative and fearful, speaking forth the self-fulfilling prophecy that your life will never be good again.
In America, our emergency number to call is 911. As Americans are now recognizing how fragile their previous understanding of national security and comfort really was, this may have been a 911 wake up call
to America. Americans must begin to realize how much they need God's security and God's comfort. When was the last time a 911 operator called you to warn you of impending danger?
What happened on 9/11 is not the issue we are facing now, rather the greater issue is for America to recognize the stark reality of the difference between peacefully living with God, or chaotically trying to live without God in these perilous times.
Many are asking, "Why did God allow this to happen?" Some are saying that this was God's judgment poured out upon America. Americans are quick to look for someone to blame for tragedies that might have been prevented. In
The Message (Peterson's modern translation of the Holy Scriptures), we read in John 9 about Jesus and His disciples seeing a man who was blind from birth. His disciples asked,
"'Rabbi, who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?' Jesus said, 'You're asking the wrong question. You're looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do
(now).'"
Rather than asking why this happened, we must let God bring the tragedy of 9/11 to a point of resolution and ending. Do not insist upon placing a question mark forever upon that day. As we grieve with our nation, and with the world, let us remember that God's mercy can restore our peace.
Our Father in heaven, the eyes of America are upon you right now. We so need your grace, mercy, love, healing, and your presence with us. You have said that if your people would humble themselves and pray and seek your face and turn from their own wicked ways, then would you hear those prayers in heaven and heal our land. Lord, we know not what to do nor even what to ask you for. The future must be given to you, for we do not have any answers for what has happened in these past days. We humbly come to you, asking for your guidance and your grace to do what you tell us to do.
We ask that you please pour out great grace and mercy upon the victims, their families, and the incredible heroes who stepped into this trawedy, some even paying for their help with their own lives. Please give xeace and healing to the many who have experienced loss of loved ones. Please give peace and healing to those who are terribly frightened right now.
Lord, you have been merciful and forgiving to America. And yet, so many Americans have transgressed your law and turned away from you, refusing to give you place and honor within our schools, our government, our courts, and within hearts that not only do not believe in you but even hate you. Father, reveal your Son Jesus to the hearts that have been broken open and are vulnerable and hurting right now. Hear us, O gracious God, open your eyes and see the trouble of America. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous or deserving, but because of your great mercy. We acknowledge our need in this time of great confusion, amid rumors of war.
Our President has declared war on terrorism. We will not rejoice in going to war, as war brings death to the innocent as well as those who are wicked. Guide our leaders, Lord, for you alone know what should be done. The Word says that the king's heart is in your hand and you direct it like a river wherever you please. Please guide the heart of our President, and the hearts of his advisors. Although a man's ways may seem right to him, it is you who weighs his heart and knows its innermost desires and purposes. You desire us to do what is right and what is acceptable to you (Proverbs 21:1-3,
NIV).
Your Word also says that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving must be made for everyone-for all those in authority-that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. We bind our President's will and all of his advisors' wills to your will, God, and to your timing. Please keep their hearts in your hand. We loose all wrong counsel of man from our leaders, and we loose the effects and influences of wrong agreements from every leader and every person who has any part in directing the course of our nation and the world's affairs right now.
Many of us are struggling with wanting the terrorists pay for their evil against innocent people. It is hard to want them to be saved from the consequences of their sins, for they have done much harm. But you have said in your Word (Romans 12:19) that vengeance is yours. Lord, we acknowledge that we do not know what should be done here, for only you understand what should happen now.
Lord, we bind the terrorists-body, soul, and spirit-to your will. Father, we will not assume to know what your will is for them at this time. We bind our wills to your wills, and we will trust you to be the Almighty God, ruler and judge of the universe as we know it. We bind our leaders-in body, soul, and spirit-to your will. We bind their minds to the mind of Christ. We ask that you would speak to them, guide them, give them the counsel they need right now to carry out your wishes regarding justice being done. Let them submit to the words of wisdom spoken by the Holy Spirit. Whatever you speak to the leaders you have given us, we will support their decisions in this regard.
We bind everyone associated with the terrorists to the will of God. We loose the enemy's assignments from these men, loose wrong cultural and religious bondage thinking from them, and loose wrong beliefs and deceptions from them. Father, please give your protection and your grace and mercy to the innocent people in America who may be attacked for looking like the terrorists or for being Muslim. It is your desire for them to know your true love and your merciful care, too.
Holy Spirit, help us to grieve as God's heart is grieving, and let us not move forward in anger. Lead us to move in tears and prayers of intercession that our Father in heaven will move in the hearts of those who wish us ill, and change those hearts. Minister mercy and grace and healing to those who have lost loved ones, friends, and co-workers in this tragedy. Minister to their children. Bless those who have shown such compassion and heroism during these hard days.
And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example-to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. This is the only true and right response when I'm pushed beyond my limits. If my circumstances prevent me from praying aloud during the day, please listen to my heart's prayers for your will to be done. What Satan meant for evil, Lord turn to good. Let there be a great spiritual revival come from this tragedy, that many would come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
Amen
